Matthew Quick is an Australian artist who in his latest series Monumental Nobodies, has decided to revisit images of famous sculptures with disturbing elements, incorporating modern references to gadgets and pop culture. Why this gesture? The idea of this series came out after a reflection of the artist on the tendency of history to destroy art for ideological reasons: the demolition of buildings, the burning of books and the destruction of statues. Why should art be a victim, always and anyway? And this is how he himself vandalizes his work, to provoke and to reflect on the value of the history of art. Everything becomes confused, a common thread is created between the one who creates the work and the one who destroys it through vandalism, the universal connection is still leaving a mark and it seems that Matthew has succeeded.
