The Berlin-based design studio Balzer Balzer, founded by the brothers Yanik, Nils and Moritz, has gained recognition for their innovative approach to design, particularly with their creation Bubble Light, which we want to tell you about today. These unique pieces fuse raw materials and industrial processes, looking at the typical Murano glassblowing technique, which we have already told you about here by mentioning Alice Crepaldi’s design, which somehow reminded us of Balzer Balzer’s design. But let’s find out more about their inspiration.
Bubble Lights embody Balzer Balzer studio’s philosophy of letting production processes drive design. Made in Berlin, these lamps feature glass that seems to spill out of a stainless steel cage, creating a dynamic, swelling structure. This design plays with a moment of tension, in which the fragile glass contrasts with the robust metal structure.
The ‘cage’ is inspired by industrial bunker lights, originally designed to protect the glass inside. When these lights moved from industrial environments to domestic interiors, their protective function became superfluous. Balzer Balzer Studio repurposed this now decorative element, making it central to their production process. The result is a lamp that not only illuminates, but also showcases the transformation of materials, with the process made visible through the interaction of the glass with the cage.
Each Bubble Light is a unique piece, available in various colours and levels of translucence. The uniqueness of each piece is further emphasised by the fact that each lamp is numbered, signed and completely unrepeatable.
