Cian Oba-Smith is a London-based photographer who has focused his artistic research on the relationship between the subjects he loves to capture and their places of belonging. Through his sophisticated and never artificial style, the artist tells the stories of those who live in often forgotten communities, such as the African-American knights of Philadelphia and the rapidly depleting community of Tory Island.
While claiming to be attracted to themes that concern him personally, he has often shot outside the UK, in countries as far away as China, where he has tried to give a visual response to the social issues that characterize the world in which we live.
“I think the difficulty of modern culture is that photography is spread and consumed at such a fast pace that it is difficult to distinguish between a real story and a built one”.
The dialogue with these realities is fundamental to get to have quality shots, which want to be beautiful to look at, but especially interesting to discover.
