New York is a city that we feel to know perfectly. Each of its districts has been the backdrop and scenography of dozens of films and stories, a stage on which movements and counter-cultures were born and raised.

New York is an inexhaustible place,”a maze of endless steps,” writes Paul Auster. Every corner of it seems to be iconic, every colour, every defect celebrated. From Spike Lee to Woody Allen, from Oliver Stone to Scorsese, from Billy Wilder to Robert Wise. New York is an immortal and iconic city.

Dutch photographer Stijn Hoekstra then tried to look at NY and tell it through his shots as if it were a film. The smoke of the subway, underground colors, fog, yellow school buses, neon, the dizziness of its skyscrapers and the hot light that cuts the streets suddenly.

His photographic project Cinematic New York, realized during a week-long holiday, shows every clichès in an intimate and rarefied light, as if he wanting to tell the New York of his dreams and desires, veiled by a nostalgia inherited only from its stories.
