Classical sculpture and superheroes—two worlds that seem worlds apart, yet in Filippo Tincolini’s works, they appear made for each other.
Born in Pontedera in 1972 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Filippo Tincolini’s art is deeply rooted in the tradition of Carrara marble, one of the most iconic materials in art history. However, the Italian sculpture doesn’t simply replicate the past: his work is an original combination of classicism and experimentation, exploring modern themes such as technology, identity, and the relationship between humanity and the environment.
One of his most emblematic works is the sculpture Spaceman, first created during the lockdown. Tincolini’s astronaut, dressed in a spacesuit with flowers sprouting from the helmet, represents the duality between technological progress and our intrinsic connection to nature.

Filippo Tincolini uses marble as his primary expressive medium, a material he knows intimately thanks to his years of training in Carrara and his experiences in the local workshops and foundries. However, what sets his art apart is his experimental use of this traditional material. The artist doesn’t limit himself to sculpting classical forms, but pushes the boundaries of sculpture by integrating contemporary techniques, such as resin and polymaterial applications. His works convey a constant dialogue between past and future, craftsmanship and technology.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Tincolini’s artistic production is his ability to connect classical mythology with pop culture characters. In his Ancient Gods series, the artist explores the connection between mythological deities and modern superheroes, showing how both figures serve as timeless archetypes. In these sculptures, crafted from marble and painted to evoke the polychromy of ancient Greek statues, mythological heroes merge with iconic pop culture figures, creating a bridge between the past and contemporary imagination. For example, the sculpted figures resemble ancient warriors, equipped with helmets and shields, but with details reminiscent of modern superheroes like Spiderman, Captain America, or Iron Man.

Filippo Tincolini’s sculptures represent an extraordinary fusion of classical art and pop culture. Through the use of marble and the integration of modern symbols such as superheroes and astronauts, the artist creates works that speak of identity, exploration, and sustainability.
