Franchise Freedom, an ode to the freedom of Studio DRIFT

On the occasion of Liberation Day in the Netherlands on May 5th, the artist duo Studio DRIFT created a beautiful performance of 300 drones.

The work, similar to the one they did in July 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11, illuminated the night sky above the Maas River in Rotterdam.
Using a specially developed algorithm, in fact, Studio DRIFT managed to make those drones move in the exact same way that a swarm or a starling move.

“COVID-19 makes it abundantly clear that we as people depend on each other, the future only has value if we can rebuild this, together and sustainably, based on a greater, collective interest.”

Said Ralph Nauta of Studio DRIFT, motivating the choice to represent a swarm in which so many individuals move together in the same direction stressing the importance of two fundamental principles of humanity, health and freedom.

Franchise Freedom, this is the name of the installation, was created by the duo as an ode to freedom and to pay homage to all those professionals who, especially in the last period, are working hard to safeguard our health.
