This or That – Pure Evil

At the Wunderkammern gallery in Milan, via Nerino 2, a few days ago opened the exhibition Not my circus, not my monkeys, a solo show by artist PURE EVIL. On display at the exhibition are some of the works from his most famous series Nightmare, which portrays faces of celebrities from music and cinema, inspired by the 1960s, a time of special creative energy, both in Europe and the United States.
The dark revisitation of the subjects passes through a common element in all the works, namely a dense black tear that runs across the faces of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Jones, Beatles and Basquiat.
The inspiration for this series, begun by the Welsh artist in 2011, comes directly from family stories, in particular his father’s Pop Art books, but also from a catalog of Andy Warhol’s works and the film “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” from which precisely the first work entitled “Richard Burton’s Nightmare – Liz Taylor” will be born.

Collater.al, on the occasion of the exhibition Not my circus, not my monkeys-a title inspired by an obscure Polish expression-interviewed PURE EVIL, asking him to take sides in what is utopically a world in which there always seems to be only two contrasting elements to choose between.
