Karlotta Freier is an illustrator and animation director based in Brooklyn, who has made her art an emotional act rather than a technical one. As she explained in an interview with It’s Nice That in 2022, “Her approach focuses more on atmosphere than on cleverness, aiming to highlight everyday elements to create scenes that are consistent and easily relatable.” Her technique is characterized by meticulous line work, delicate color combinations, and bold compositions, all aimed at evoking emotions and feelings.

Karlotta’s passion for illustration emerged from a young age, though it was not always in the forefront. After several work experiences, including a job at a tattoo studio and in the costume department of a theater, she decided to study graphic design at university, later switching to illustration after a semester. In the same interview with It’s Nice That, she recalled how, as a child, she loved the drawings on chocolate wrappers so much that she thought, «It must be amazing to make drawings for chocolate».

Her work then gained traction in the editorial world, with collaborations ranging from LA Times to The New Yorker. Her research focuses on the emotional tension within articles, exploring themes such as hope, sadness, loneliness, and anger.

More recently, Karlotta worked as the art director for a series of films for Hermès‘ Lunar New Year campaign. For this project, she created a dragon inspired by her father’s dog, a process that involved learning new software and creating numerous sketches. As she explained during a Nicer Tuesdays event, the animation work was an exploration journey, from the initial design to the final version—another example of her ability to convey emotions through visual art.
