The faceless drama of Lello Muzio

Lello Muzio is an Italian photographer oriented toward new visual languages and focused on the exploration of empty spaces, scenes of everyday life and, more generally, on storytelling. Aesthetic research is evident in his shots, which, even in portrait shots, always seek a conceptuality that is visually harmonious. An example is the shot “Sospesa,” selected for Liquida photofestival 2023 in Turin. The shot features a protagonist person, a woman probably. Gender is evoked by the clothing and hair, although it is not certain. A baroque flavor is given by the burgundy-colored velvet sofa, the same color reproposed on the wall and also present in the texture of the jacket, which contribute to a feeling typical of horror vacui.

The whole composition is charged with presence, although the face is not visible. The position evokes a dramatic moment, perhaps the subject is lost in the void, perhaps asleep or perhaps simply suspended in a moment. The saturated colors that envelop the nape of the neck and the beam of light that illuminates it are chosen by Lello Muzio to increase the drama of the scene, which takes on the appearance of a “funeral context.” The feeling of heaviness, almost as if air is missing, breaks the breath and holds the moment in that precise eerie instant of the hic et nunc.

Lello Muzio’s work is featured in the selection of the Liquida Photofestival in Turin 2023.
