On the occasion of her exhibition at the London contemporary art gallery Blain|Southern, Chiharu Shiota has created Me Somewhere Else, a site-specific installation that leaves you breathless.

Playing with her favorite material, a thread of cloth, this time she analyzed the connection of the body with the mind, trying to answer the question “will my consciousness remain when my body is no longer there?”. Using a blood-red thread, the Japanese artist has handmade an immense net that descends from the ceiling to flow into a point on the floor in the middle of the room where it meets a pair of bronze feet, created by making a cast of her own feet.

The solidity and hardness of the bronze contrast strongly with the delicacy of the red thread that, according to the artist, represents the thousands of neural connections of our brain.

The installation Me Somewhere Else will remain at Blain|Southern until 19 January.
