Doug Aitken‘s latest work is the perfect representation of a site-specific installation. It is Mirage Detroit and is a house built entirely using mirrors. The installation was created inside the former State Savings Bank, a statuary building built entirely of stone in the early 1900s. The building, which has remained intact over time, displays a classic style, with columns and staircases that lead to large halls. The central space of the building is composed of an enormous hall characterized by a barrel vault. It was here that Doug Aitken decided to create his work.
With its darkened windows and softly choreographed lights, Mirage Detroit, with its dozens of mirrors, reflects all the beauty of the architecture that surrounds it. The shape of the installation is reminiscent of a classic American suburban house. All the spaces are developed on the ground floor connected by a labyrinth of corridors.
When you enter the living room, you feel like you are immersed in a kaleidoscope, what you look at changes according to your movements and there is no right or wrong point of view.
