Spike Lee brought the 59FIFTY into pop culture

And New Era’s new collection with the American director proves it perfectly

The 59FIFTY cap is an object that, over the years, has evolved into a symbol that goes beyond the baseball diamond. On May 9, for 59FIFTY Day, New Era celebrates this legacy with a release created in collaboration with Spike Lee, looking back to reaffirm its impact in the present. The director is, in fact, a key figure in the transition of the cap from sports to pop culture. The collection, made up of seven pieces, draws inspiration from one of the most significant moments in the brand’s history: the debut of the red 59FIFTY New York Yankees cap in 1996.

When New Era introduced the 59FIFTY line in 1954, designed by Harold Koch, the goal was to define a new standard for fitted caps: solid structure, flat brim, and precise fit. Born on the fields of Major League Baseball, the model gradually moved beyond the boundaries of sport, becoming a surface for expression.

This evolution is what made it central to streetwear. Worn by athletes, musicians, and artists, the cap has become a personal statement, capable of crossing generations without losing relevance. Over time, the silhouette expanded into the 59FIFTY Family, with variants such as Low Profile, A-Frame, and Retro Crown, while maintaining its core DNA.

The turning point came in 1996. During the World Series, Spike Lee asked Chris Koch for a red Yankees cap, far from the team’s official colors. With the approval of George Steinbrenner and MLB, New Era accepted the challenge, turning a personal request into a cultural precedent. When Spike Lee wore that cap during Game 3, the 59FIFTY became an accessory that went beyond sportswear as we knew it. It marked the beginning of a movement that brought this silhouette into pop culture and the fashion system.

Thirty years later, that same energy is reinterpreted in the new collection. Six navy models celebrate the Yankees’ World Series victories through graphic details such as baseballs, pennants, and iconic years, while keeping the front logo, New Era flag on the side, and MLB logo on the back. The key piece remains the reissue of the red cap. The New Era x Spike Lee 30th Anniversary Red New York Yankees Cap revives the original colorway, enhanced with an anniversary side patch and Spike Lee’s signature under the brim.

The rollout follows a precise logic: in the days leading up to May 9, one navy model is released each day, culminating in the final drop of the red cap. No restock, no second production.
