Los Angeles-based artist Nick Runge uses the watercolor technique to make portraits of people and skeletons in a unique style, which includes elements of abstraction and hints of realism.
“I first sketch the composition, but I try not to have any kind of formula”.
The faces painted by Nick are modelled on simple, decisive but at the same time detailed strokes, which convey the mood of the characters with great credibility, without ever getting too close to realism itself. The soft colours and expressive poses add a naturalistic touch to the portraits, even when the subject is a skeleton wearing a jacket.
Born in 1985, artist Nick Runge grew up in Colorado. Coming from a creative family of professional artists, he has always been interested in art and the world of creativity. After working as a full-time illustrator from 2004-2015 he decided to devote himself to the technique of watercolor.
“Oil painting and watercolour led me to move away from realistic pop art, and this allowed me to focus more on HOW something is painted, and not on WHO I am portraying. Art for Art”.
