RxART is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help children heal through the extraordinary power of visual art. They commission contemporary artists to transform sterile healthcare facilities into engaging and stimulating environments full of beauty.
Thanks to this special initiative Takashi Murakami has decorated a room at the Children’s National Hospital, considered one of the 10 best paediatric hospitals in the country. Last year the hospital treated over 219,000 children from the United States and around the world.
The Japanese artist filled the room and the various examination and treatment machines with his iconic style, giving it a whole new colour and atmosphere compared to the previous greyness.
“A CT scan or PET scan can be a frightening experience for anyone, and certainly for a child. Now, however, this room is pure joy”.
The CT suite can be such an impressive environment especially for the little ones, sometimes a little beauty and lightness are a great help, like the rainbow landscape of smiling flowers against a blue sky studded with swollen white clouds by Takashi Murakami.
RxART is designed to reduce fear and relieve anxiety.
The projects that extend from murals, wall cladding designs, CT casings, in 36 hospitals, are all made at no cost to the facilities.
