Finnish artist Kari Kola is the author of the greatest site-specific work ever created. The installation takes its name from a quote by Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde, who described the place as “Savage beauty“.
The work is located right between the Connemara National Park, a protected natural area in the west of Ireland characterized by picturesque mountains, grasslands, and forests.
The artist was commissioned to create the artwork as part of the Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture event program.
It took several weeks to install the lights, as well as the 20 kilometers of cables connected to 16 generators that were deposited by helicopter on the side of the mountain.
The work of art flooded the mountains with vibrant, pulsating colors, with the intention of highlighting the beauty of this natural park, the green, and blue light was reflected and illuminated the entire surrounding landscape.
“Since I can’t paint, I paint with light“, the artist has created more than 2,000 installations in unique locations, including the illumination of UNESCO’s Paris headquarters for the opening of the Year of Light 2015 and the illumination of Stonehenge for World Heritage Day in 2018.
Because of the current situation, all visits have been canceled, but you can take part in digital tours with just one click, to enjoy all the magic created by Kari Kola, the artist who paints with light.
