In Skidmarks, Al Badiya Studio takes us on an intimate and visceral journey into the everyday universe of Lahcen Iwi, a Moroccan sculptor who has transformed discarded material into living art. Raised in Marrakesh among the hands and wheels of his father, a tire repairman, Lahcen developed a unique sensitivity from a young age for form, material, and the narrative potential of abandoned objects. Today, in his workshop-studio, every piece of used tire becomes part of a new identity—like his iconic sculpture Tire Lion, which welcomes travelers at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca.
Al Badiya Studio’s video project is not just a documentary but an authentic portrait of Iwi’s rhythm of work, his repeated gestures, and the ritualistic nature of his creative process. The camera moves through the worn, black textures of rubber, revealing a raw and profound aesthetic that blends Moroccan tradition with a contemporary vision of North African art. The studio becomes a space of transformation, where every groove, every cut, every mark left by the rubber tells stories of resistance, memory, and rebirth.
«Every mark left behind tells a story—of movement, of resistance, of becoming».
Founded in Marrakesh, Al Badiya Studio is a creative agency that produces editorials and documentaries aimed at rediscovering the essence of Moroccan roots, with the goal of uniting—rather than dividing—the cultures of the Mediterranean. Skidmarks is one of those projects that leaves a mark—literally.
