Eric Standley is an American artist who creates complex and layered artwork in laser cut paper art inspired by Gothic and Oriental architectural elements.
His works are microscopic mandala, stained glass windows of imaginary cathedrals that open on a hidden world. Layers on layers of paper that, through a perfect mathematical, geometric and chromatic game, give rise to rigorous and perfect three-dimensional designs combining the architectural aesthetic of the 12th century with contemporary technology.
A work that is at the crossroads between art, innovation, history and science.
“The reverence for these structures seems to have to do with the infinite, it’s trying to project something that’s not even human.”
Standley is a professor of the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech Tech’s College of Architecture and Urban Studies.
