Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, an American painter whose art is deeply rooted in the aesthetics of West Africa, continues to chart a path that merges tradition with contemporary expression. Inspired by his Yoruba heritage, Adeniyi-Jones creates images that both celebrate and preserve his cultural roots while simultaneously questioning the concept of idolatry from a diasporic perspective.
His inclusion in the Nigerian Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale marks a significant milestone in his career. Complementing this achievement is the release of a new monographic book that provides a comprehensive look at Adeniyi-Jones’s artistic journey, Encounters. The volume features a selection of his works, including paintings, works on paper, and prints. Alongside the visual content, the book includes essays by Albert Neuendorf and Ekow Eshun, as well as a conversation between the artist and Osei Bonsu. This monograph stands as a testament to Adeniyi-Jones’s commitment to preserving and reinventing his cultural heritage within a modern artistic language.
As part of the group exhibition Nigeria Imaginary at the Biennale, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones presented the site-specific installation Celestial Gathering (2024). This monumental work, created in oil on aluminum panels and suspended from the ceiling of Palazzo Canal, pushes the boundaries of the artist’s visual language by exploring the values of time, place, and context.
The use of radiant pigments evokes a bird’s-eye visual experience, paying homage to Venetian artistic traditions and the interplay of light in intimate spaces. Symbolic elements such as rosaries and decorative forms intertwine with fragmented bodies, reflecting the rich architectural history of Venice.
