Dolby Laboratories is a company founded in 1965 with headquarters in the United States that develops audio technologies and realizes projects that arise from the encounter between science and art. Munky and Tool of North America, a partner in creative production, has designed an AR experience that develops in the form of site-specific immersive installations that can be seen at Dolby Gallery under the project name of Asteria.
The work was inspired by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and consists of an AR exploration for iOS devices, divided into 3 acts and synchronized to a 12-minute film that is looped onto the 64-foot LED wrap around wall of the gallery.
Spectators are taken to three different worlds, each corresponding to the different possibilities of development and the change of Earth in the year 2027: taking advantage of the real-time programming, the audio-reactive 3D images and the sound mix by Dolby Atmos, celestial bodies move through the space while exoplanet ground is projected onto the LED ribbon wall of the tunnel. The specially designed audio system allows users with their smartphones to be surrounded by sound throughout the gallery, creating a futuristic multi-immersive space adventure, supported by visual elements inspired by scientific research and data.
Artist Jeff Bryant has collaborated on the realization of the drawings and images that make up the three planets of the installation, imagining the project looking at the future of space travel.
