The story of Boby, the nomadic trolley

Anna Frattini

Designed by Joe Colombo and produced by B—Line, Boby integrates various functions into a single space and has become an icon of design from the very beginning, entering the permanent collections of the MoMA in New York and the Triennale in Milan. It comes in various versions and colors, with drawers and compartments made of ABS. Designed in 1970, it has become an indispensable element at home or in the office, from the creative sector to the medical field. Its practicality starts with the polypropylene wheels, which make it easy to move and maneuver.

Joe Colombo’s idea withstands the test of time, demonstrating his ability to transform ideas into functional products. The “tower furniture,” over 50 years after its birth, is still today a “rational, functional, and functioning” object, just as its inventor described it. Boby reflects Colombo’s vision of creating dynamic and transformable furnishings, detached from architectural concepts and aimed at meeting all practical needs.

Initially, Joe Colombo devoted himself to painting and then, in 1953, he joined the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. He first joined the Movimento Nucleare with Enrico Baj and Sergio Dangelo, then the MIBI (International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus). Later, he joined the MAC (Movement for Concrete Art) at the invitation of Bruno Munari. In 1964, he won the gold medal for design at the XIII Triennale for the Acrilica Lamp produced by Oluce. Then came the No. 4801 chair for Kartell, the Elda chair, the Tube armchair, and among other projects, the Candy air conditioner and the Minikitchen for Boffi. Boby is one of Colombo’s last designs, along with the Topo, Colombo, and Triedro lamp collections, as he died prematurely in 1971.
