A few days ago Burning Man began in the Nevada desert, a festival that every year gathers about 70,000 people in Black Rock City, forming a temporary community with the intention of celebrating between music and art. For those who do not know Burning Man, its peculiarity is the utopian vision of the organisers who have decided not to allow trade within the dedicated area, in fact everything is bartered – with the exception of the entrance ticket which starts at $575. Last year, heavy torrential rains disrupted the festival, stranding participants in the mud and forcing them to ration food and water. This year the weather conditions seem to be favourable so, quoting this year’s theme, they will once again try to achieve the impossible by attempting the absurd. The artist Lefty OUT There, born Francesco Campanella, who has just debuted at the festival with his installation Ad Mare, a journey into the underwater world of coral reefs, knows this well. Lefty OUT There talks about environmental awareness
We first saw renderings of this work, then a reel of the project installed at Burning Man appeared on Lefty OUT There’s Instagram profile. It is clear that Ad Mare is not just meant to be an installation, but an act of environmental awareness. The installation brings to light the importance of coral reefs through a 900 square foot display. Made from recycled materials and waste collected during previous editions of Burning Man, Ad Mare emphasises the problem of Matter Out of Place (MOOP) – dirt that does not belong in the environment – while promoting the preservation of coral reefs.
The installation is designed to simulate an underwater landscape, with three reef structures. Each reef is meticulously constructed using recycled wood, paint brushes, paint rollers, plastic spools, foam and wood scraps, displaying Lefty’s unique style. To further enrich the visual experience, laser-cut acrylic corals and plants decorate the reefs, adding depth and vibrancy to the installation and immersing visitors in a world that is both familiar and otherworldly.
