On the hills of Capalbio Scalo, overlooking Lago di Burano, a circular vision has appeared that transforms the landscape into thought. It’s called The Twelfth Swing and it’s the latest work by Francesco Arena, created for Hypermaremma in a setting where nature and contemporary art continue to intertwine in new ways.

Eleven swings make up this large site-specific installation, but only one is different from the rest. Eleven of them, cast in bronze by the historic Fonderia Artistica Battaglia in Milan, bear engraved aphorisms and quotes that assert themselves powerfully—only to be immediately questioned. The twelfth swing, however, is the one that escapes definition: a symbol of doubt, of oscillation between the true and the possible.

Arena thus builds an experience that engages the body and stimulates the mind. The act of swinging—childlike and liberating—becomes a philosophical tool, an invitation to critical thinking, a push toward a kind of freedom that is never stable but precisely for that reason, authentic. In a place suspended between sky, water, and land, the work invites us to let go, to imagine, to question and be questioned.

The Twelfth Swing is a poem to be lived—made of bronze, wind, and words. An experience that is both intimate and collective, unstable and deeply human.
