Chris Engman is an English photographer who has made his first large-scale installation, Containment, which allows its visitors to enter inside. The work is characterized by the presence of a rushing torrent, surrounded on sides by a dense forest that covers the sky. The work was conceived as a single photo, composed of the overlapping of about three hundred scenes, this according to Engman makes the project a real immersive work. In fact, the artist says that:
“Compared to a singular framed photograph the experience of this installation for the viewer is much more physical and immersive. The structure is a room, not an image of a room. The photograph is an object, in addition to being an illusion. It has weight, and volume, and changes as you walk around it. Making this installation has been a thrilling process, and this new way of working seems to afford many new possibilities.”
The exhibition is part of 2018 FotoFocus Biennal, which shows works of over 400 artists in the art spaces of Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Northern Kentucky. It is possible to visit the exhibition until January 2019.
