Perennial back pain? Swollen eyes? Chronic fatigue and headaches? Congratulations, your workstation is slowly self-destructing! Those who work in the office, as we know, tend to assume incorrect positions in front of the computer, if they do not wear glasses they lose diopters and the more they have, the more they put on. That’s why Emma was created, a life-size, realistic model commissioned by the office equipment company Fellowes Brands, which collaborated with futurist behaviorist William Higham and other experts to determine and represent the effects on human health if no immediate changes are made to the workplace.

In 2019, a series of researches were carried out and the results showed that nine out of ten employees suffer from health problems due to their working environment. This is because most workers sit for many hours staring at a screen (most of the time without a break) and this has serious repercussions on the body.

Emma shows in a concrete and extreme way the untreated symptoms caused by an unhealthy working lifestyle such as a hunched back, red and tired eyes, legs with circulation problems, swollen wrists and ankles, forearms and red legs. In short, a very realistic representation of how each of us could be if we do not take the necessary precautions.

This experiment invites people to take a little more care of themselves, introducing the habit of moving and making sure that the workstations are correctly positioned with the right ergonomic accessories. This ensures proper posture and thus contributes to reducing the risk of muscle injury and other related diseases.
