Lamps that look like ceramic sculptures

An office, a home or a single room can be perfectly furnished and still badly lit. How often do we walk into beautiful spaces with lights and lamps bordering on the horrific?! Light design works precisely to balance any space with the most appropriate luminous element.

To prove that a single lamp, but the right one, can make all the difference, we have to talk about Rollo Studio, and especially their U Collection.

The U Collection was officially presented at Good Selection during Paris Design Week, and for now it counts nine pieces, including table and bedside lamps, ambient lamps, pendants, a wall lamp and a side table.

The starting point is the same for every piece. Each object begins as an elementary shape, a pill, a cylinder, a slab, which is then rounded, folded and fitted around a single radius running through every edge. The designers themselves call the result soft order, and looking at the individual pieces, no definition could be more fitting.

The most distinctive trait of these lamps is that they work beautifully even when switched off. The table and bedside lamps, for example, can sit on a shelf and replace a vase or a collectible ceramic piece without looking out of place in any way. Once lit, the light escapes from the slits, glides over the paint and makes the body of the object look almost molten.

The pieces are 3D printed in sections in plant-based PLA, then sanded, filled and painted, with a color base and a thick layer of glossy clear coat. The sections are joined and the seams filled with real grout, deliberately left visible. Even the colors are not left to chance. There are fifteen shades divided into three scales of five steps each, from the lightest to the deepest.

For that empty spot you can’t decide whether to fill with a decorative object or a lamp, you no longer have to choose.
