Active on the English street scene since the 90s, Gary Stranger has managed to unite two arts that seem to have only one lowest common denominator, the success that they are experiencing in recent years.
I’m talking about street art and the art of typography (also known as lettering). While the web and social networks are populated by people who show off their ability to reproduce the strangest types of fonts by hand, Gray does it directly on the walls of cities, using canisters.
In his artworks there are recurring words, which at that moment inspire him or which mean something important to him, or trivially just his name. But for once the important thing is not the content, but the form. The important thing is the thousand ways in which Gary manages to manipulate and use the art of typography at will. Playing with colors, shapes, shadows, optical illusions, the result is always surprising and almost avant-garde.
