The history of IKEA through its catalogues

-

From a simple 16-page booklet to the furniture catalog par excellence, the history of the IKEA catalog began 70 years ago and can now be relived through an exhibition that retraces every single step.

The IKEA catalogue through the ages, the title of the exhibition, was set up in the IKEA museum in the center of Älmhult, a Swedish town where the company’s headquarters were moved in 1953.

The exhibition will give the public the opportunity to browse through all 70 catalogs, starting from the early 1950s, with hand-drawn furniture, up to the last one with the novelties of 2021. But it does not end there, inside the museum some of the rooms in the catalogs have been reproduced, including those of the covers of the 1973 and this year’s issues, where it is possible to be immortalized in a photo.

The IKEA catalogue through the ages, in addition to celebrating the successes of the Swedish giant, tells how our homes have changed over time, how furniture has adapted to new needs, how the pivotal spaces of homes have moved from kitchens to studios.

In addition, IKEA has also thought about those who cannot go to visit the museum in person, making available on its website all the scans of all the numbers in its catalogs.

Browse through the catalogs here and get lost in 70 years of IKEA furniture.
