Franco-Iranian designer India Mahdavi returns to playing with color and shapes, this time alongside Omer Arbel. Mahdavi unveiled a special edition of her Oliver armchair at Matter and Shape in Paris, upholstered with ten bright yellow electrical outlets designed by Arbel, co-founder of Bocci. The inspiration is unmistakable: the iconic smiley face drawn by Harvey Ball in 1963. The result? A piece that subverts the ordinary, transforming a functional element into an aesthetic detail. “Smiley is a tribute to the small details that bring joy,” says Mahdavi. For the occasion, the outlets have been customized in a special shade of yellow to amplify the piece’s vibrancy. The base remains that of the Oliver armchair, a compact and geometric design originally created for a London residential project.
