The Melancholic Claymation of James Willan

-
Anna Frattini

James Willan tells stories with clay-covered fingers, glitches, and melancholy. His Instagram feed is an archive of animated micro-universes that feel like they came from a forgotten VHS tape or a child’s dream. Born in Middlesbrough and now based in London, James is a multidisciplinary artist and animator who blends analog and digital aesthetics in a delicate, deeply personal balance.

His animations are often slow, intentionally imperfect, and emotionally charged. Bizarre characters, surreal creatures, urban settings, and everyday details move in scenes that feel handmade, yet filtered through 3D modeling and rendering software. There’s something deeply human in the clumsy movements, the use of textures, the desaturated colors, and the soundtracks that accompany many of his clips: there’s never any rush, never any excess.

James Willan

James started with stop motion as a self-taught artist, filming his first clay creatures with his phone. Today, he continues to work between physical and digital modeling, alternating personal projects with commissions for brands and musicians. Despite his growth, he has stayed true to his visual identity: a raw, fragile aesthetic where nostalgia blends with the contemporary. Skateboards, VHS tapes, flickering light bulbs, masks, dreamlike architecture, and a subtle irony run through all his works—without ever overpowering the emotion.

In an age where digital tends toward perfection, Willan works in the opposite direction: he introduces flaws, embraces the unfinished, and builds worlds that seem held together by duct tape—but for that very reason feel authentic and full of life. His work is an ode to imperfection and DIY, which is why it resonates so strongly with those seeking a different voice in animation and motion art.
