The disdainful genuineness of Laurina Paperina

Laurina Paperina is a true entity who, in her Zio Pork Studio, draws (and then paints or constructs) characters of all kinds. In her artist statement, she defines herself as «a duck with a human head and vice versa who doesn’t want to make serious art». By not taking herself too seriously, she has – from the beginning of her artistic journey – ridiculed the excessive importance that tends to be given to artistic endeavors, but not only that. Also to politics, religion, and pop culture. In Laurina Paperina’s works, there is sex, disturbing elements, and a disdainful genuineness that strikes us deeply – strongly inspired by ’80s and ’90s pop culture. The humorous writings, animals, and humanoids in her drawings make us smile, inviting us into a fantasy world that always draws from our contemporaneity.
