Where others see only a pothole, a manhole or a crack, Ememem sees a ‘canvas’ on which to weave his special creations. Whether you use a car, a bicycle or other means of transport, you often see potholes or cracks in the asphalt. Fortunately, where the public authorities fail to arrive, artists like Ememem, who repairs potholes and turns them into works of art, arrive. The technique used by the French artist is called flacking and involves repairing defects in the urban environment by inserting tiles and majolica.
The Flacking is a technique similar to or rather inspired by the Japanese practice of kintsugi, only instead of repairing with gold, Ememem uses tiles, majolica or beautiful mosaics.
It is a hard and complex type of work that, contrary to what it seems, requires many hours. First of all, because you have to study well the point where you will install tiles. Then you have to cut out to perfection all the tiles or majolica tiles that are, every little mistake can cost dearly. After positioning them begins the drying phase that for obvious reasons can take several hours.
In addition to all this, there is the fact that these types of works are considered as “vandalism” according to the law, so it is good to work during the middle of the night when everyone is in bed.
Ememem has also arrived in Italy, many of his creations can be found in Genoa, Turin and Florence, but with his art he has toured the world.
With the main purpose of redeveloping the cities, always creating unique and never the same, here is all the art of Ememem. But don’t miss any of his creations just follow him on Instagram.
