The electronic music and visual arts festival, MAST, returns to Scicli for its fourth edition, exploring the many facets of contemporary desertification through music and visual arts. From August 1st to 10th, the baroque details of the Sicilian town will serve as the backdrop for a unique cultural event. The festival invites the community to reflect on the various forms of desertification – environmental, cultural, and social – through a series of artistic, literary, and sonic expressions. The desert theme extends beyond the festival venues, raising questions about the need and ways to resist cultural and social desertification. The festival responds with the strength of a conscious community that finds new forms of expression and resistance through art.

The music at MAST in Scicli
MAST will feature several names in electronic music, including Pietro Vicentini of Real Timpani, Ya Hu, Kura, and Ginevra Nervi, a young producer from Genoa. She will present her first solo album, “The Disorder of Appearances,” a work that blends ambient and electronic music, in the evocative setting of the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione. This year, there will also be a six-part podcast: “Among the Dunes of This Desert,” created by Giovanni Padua, Marina Ladduca, and Alberto Ladduca. This project narrates a journey into the desert future of the Mediterranean. It will be available at the festival headquarters, CENTRALE MAST, which will also feature Rhizome Radio, a Roman radio station. In collaboration with MAST, they have designed an all-vinyl radio schedule to enjoy from August 1st to 7th.

From August 1st to 10th, attendees can also take part in an immersive tour, this year reimagined with an exploratory and artistic twist. The highlight of this journey will be an unconventional itinerary discovering a hidden vein of Scicli, narrated through the photographic exhibition by Melissa Carnemolla and Nanni Licitra, two Sicilian photographers who investigate the theme of desertification in Sicily. The exhibition, curated by Caterina Migliore, will be accompanied by a soundtrack, an authentic sonic experience provided by Ya Hu, a Palestinian artist who will undertake a 10-day artistic residency in Scicli.
