It’s official: the theme of next year’s Met Gala will be Superfine: Tailoring Black Style—but what does that mean? Often, the themes chosen by Anna Wintour for fashion’s biggest annual event aren’t immediately clear. Take Camp: Notes on Fashion from 2019 as an example. And if you’re watching Vogue: The 90s on Disney+, you might already be familiar with this. But let’s dive deeper into this announcement and who will join Wintour on this journey.
The Met Gala hasn’t drawn inspiration from menswear since 2003 with Men in Skirts, and for 2025, the theme is inspired by Monica Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. In her publication, Miller defines Black dandyism as both an aesthetic and a political construct.
Dandy style refers to dressing elegantly and smartly, and Black dandyism becomes a strategy for rethinking identity, for re-imagining oneself in a different context—specifically, when discussing slavery and the transition to emancipation. The exhibition will focus on this transformation, exploring «how Black people evolved from being enslaved, styled as luxury objects and purchased like any other symbol of wealth and status, to autonomous individuals in their own stylistic expression, becoming global trendsetters,» as Vogue America explains.
Next year’s Met Gala co-chairs will be Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky (whom we’ve been seeing everywhere lately), along with Pharrell Williams. To everyone’s surprise, LeBron James will also participate as an honorary chair, joining Anna Wintour for the occasion.
