Michael McGregor’s still lifes

The aim of artist and illustrator Michael McGregor (1983) is to visually translate everything that strikes him during the day. The practice of observation becomes fundamental within his artistic process. The memories and sensations evoked by the places he lives and the objects he uses become the focus of his inspiration. From markets to the rooms of his home, from wine bottles to a laid table. These are McGregor’s favourite subjects, in which flowers, a recurring element of his production, cannot be missing. Due to their static nature and inanimate component, Michael himself considers his works ‘still lifes‘, an immortal subject in the history of art that he is particularly fascinated by.

Michael McGregor is not so much intrigued by the element he chooses to portray as by its story. A water bottle becomes a vase of flowers. A table full of objects tells a precise moment lost in the past. In this way, Michael emphasises the emotional component that everyday objects contain, through a light and colourful language that evokes harmony and calm. The “childlike” technique and pastel colours make McGregor’s works immediate and easy to read, triggering in the viewer a sense of familiarity that brings him closer to the subjects.
