As part of the extensive Moncler Genius project, the brand directed by Remo Ruffini presented its latest collaboration with Chinese designer DingYun Zhang. 

Born in Beijing, Zhang began his journey into the world of fashion and design by designing sneaker patterns in his high school days. Upon graduation he moved to London where he studied and graduated in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins College in 2020. 

Exactly one year ago, in February 2020, Zhang launched his eponymous brand attracting the attention of the entire fashion world thanks to his interest in functionality, padding and exaggerated volumes.

In this collection for Moncler Genius, the Chinese designer brings together his futuristic aesthetic and Moncler’s distinctive craftsmanship in a series composed of padded garments made with a heat-glued quilting technique that gives the items an irregularity that reflects Zhang’s philosophy.

The whole project stems from a new reading of the relationship that exists between the garment and the wearer, in a game of contrasts that leads the Chinese designer not to refer to the classic and original imagery of Moncler, the mountain, but to the depths of the sea and the life forms that inhabit it. 

Structure and layering dominate the design of the collection. The result is immediate, bewitching and full of details such as adjustable knot buttons, typical of Chinese tradition, hidden zippers and glove cuffs. Amplified volumes are realized with extremely light fabrics.

Coats, padded vests and micro jackets with or without hood, in ultralight shiny nylon with a ruched look are part of the proposal and are combined with maxi padded masks, leggings and cycling shorts.

The color palette and the mushrooms that grow naturally on the sculptures submerged in the depths of the sea and plays with shades of brown, light green, light gray, sand, blue and earthy nuances. Organic hues are translated into an abstract print, while color-block effects are revealed through the holes in the fabrics.

The MONCLER + DINGYUN ZHANG collection represents a playful spirit that reflects the futuristic philosophy of the Chinese designer and the technical elaborations of the Italian brand.
