Dutch architecture studio MVRDV, of which we have previously spoken here, has completed the KWG M Cube shopping center in Beijing, presenting to the public a visual work of great design.

The project was designed to reconcile two seemingly conflicting needs such as the desire to stand out from KWG Group Holdings and the intention of the government to combine the structure within the urban context. The architects thought to cover every side of the building, 36 meters high, with holographic tiles of great visual impact. Each piece is ceramic and was produced in China with three layers fired at different temperatures, so as to create the pearlescent effect. The study stated:

“We designed the KWG M Cube so that the building continuously displays new patterns and colours. Depending on the weather and light conditions and where you stand, the facade might look subtly grey, or it might shine with all the colours of the rainbow. In this part of Beijing, there are restrictions on architecture and many nearby buildings are completed in shades of grey and beige. Our solution allowed us to do exactly what the client and the city wanted: to create an attractive visual statement in which exuberance and modesty go hand in hand”.

The outdoor terrace area is another interesting solution allow visitors to enjoy a moment of relaxation on sunny days and the view on local landmarks, including the Forbidden City. Once again, the MVRDV studio has made a center by creating a space that is as functional as it is beautiful.
