Debuted at Pitti Uomo 96 – the most important international platform for men’s clothing and accessories collections and for the launch of new fashion projects – Givenchy‘s new collection and its creative director Clare Waight Keller has also unveiled a collaboration with the historic sneaker brand Onitsuka Tiger: the Mexico 66 GDX.
If you don’t know the shoe model, we can recall in your mind Uma Thurman in Kill Bill while he was doing a couple of commissions that included some beheading in Tokyo. She was dressed in yellow with exactly those sneakers on her feet, yellow with black stripes and an inscription on the side of the sole that read “Fuck You“. But that’s another story. Actually, the actress did not wear randomly, she was mentioned in fact “The Last Fight of Chen” where Bruce Lee was wearing them in the original coloring in white and red and blue stripes.
The shoes were presented two years before the 1968 Olympics – hence the name Mexico 66, even if their original name was “Limber” – and another interesting curiosity, it was not volleyball or basketball shoes but just running shoes, although more suitable for marathons.
Sneakers have been returning to the streets of cities for months now in original colors and super fresh and fashionable variants. But let’s close the curiosity chapter and talk about this collaboration with a refined taste and quality; the materials are, in fact, a fundamental prerogative for the iconic model, a leather of very high workmanship compared to the basic models.
The imprint of the French brand is visible in the form of a perforated logo on the inside of the upper while on the outside, the perfect contrast with the embroidered “Tiger” application, but also in the tongue above the heel with the print of the two brands.
The limited edition Givenchy x Onitsuka Tiger is available from today, June 13 in the flagship stores of Givenchy and Onitsuka Tiger, a dedicated pop-up store in Japan and online.
