The subversive design of Ross Hansen

-
Anna Frattini

Ross Hansen is an artist and designer who works right where design meets the world of sculpture. His approach challenges the codes of production and taste — a language born from the subversive use of materials and industrial techniques. Epoxy resin, wood, glass, leather, ceramics, and textiles become tools of an exploration that blends craftsmanship and technology, organic and artificial, in a precarious balance between nature and industry.

Hansen translates into his work a constant attention to natural forms and the evolutionary logic of the living world. The objects he creates resemble suspended organisms, fragments of matter in metamorphosis: lamps that evoke corals, seats that bend like roots, surfaces that retain the memory of a process more than the perfection of a form.

The design pieces he creates reveal a coherent and ever-evolving path, where each series becomes a reflection on how design can embody emotion and fragility. Hansen doesn’t seem limited to constructing objects, but rather tactile and visual experiences — where matter tells its own story and the act of making becomes a poetic gesture.

Behind the formal rigor lies a broader tension: that of giving design back a living soul. Each work seems to ask the viewer to reconsider their relationship with objects — with their origins and with what they represent. His work, now part of the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, expresses a vision of design that goes beyond production.
