Shishi San is a multidisciplinary textile artist renowned for pushing the boundaries of artistic practice through her fluffy sculptures created using the tufting technique. Each of Shishi’s works is one of a kind, as she never replicates her pieces. This allows the artist to continually reinvent herself, exploring new shapes, color balances, and patterns that range from organic to symmetrical.

San is always on the lookout for new techniques and discovered tufting in 2019—«a technique that captivated her and has stayed with her ever since,» as stated in her website bio. Over the past four years, she has been relentlessly producing tufted creations characterized by a wide variety of motifs and forms.

Vietnamese Origins and Inspirations in Tufting

Shishi hails from Vietnam, a country that serves as a profound source of inspiration for her work. Her art draws from Vietnamese folklore and local traditions, incorporating elements of her personal history to create deeply representative pieces. Vietnamese culture, which shares historical ties with China, Japan, Korea, and other regions in South and Southeast Asia, plays a central role in her artistic practice.

Since 2022, Shishi has also been exploring the sculptural potential of tufting, crafting unique three-dimensional works. Among these, her first fluffy vases—soft, tufted vessels—stand out as a turning point in her career. With their originality, vibrant colors, and refined patterns, the fluffy vases have established Shishi San as one of the most exciting emerging figures in the world of tufting. Through her ability to reinvent textiles and blend tradition with innovation, Shishi San continues to captivate audiences and redefine the language of textile art.
