Kukbuk – the photographic project by Kateřina Sýsová presented at the Yeast Photo Festival – is a true visual guide to Czech culinary culture. Visual sketches, expressiveness, and characters assigned specific roles are all part of her work. In Sýsová’s photographs, the scenes are meticulously staged, so much so that the photographer herself conceives her photographs as works that can be viewed from multiple perspectives. In this visual puzzle, there is visual humor, influences from the past, and references to the present, but above all, a thread that connects image and word, touching on gender issues associated with the pleasure of observation. The influences in Sýsová’s photography clearly stem from the typical visual style of the 1980s and retro inspirations – which are predominant in her photography.
