As pointed out in 2018 by the United Nations, the problem of plastics in the sea is among the six most serious environmental emergencies. So to try to solve, at least in part, this big problem was created Sweep Island.

A prototype of “resilient marine infrastructure”, a small artificial island able to ensure and maintain the biodiversity of the seabed.

Sweep Island is made up of two parts. The first one is a vessel, a wooden structure capable of providing a habitat for different wildlife species.
The second is a collector, located five meters below, printed in 3D, capable of intercepting macro and microplastics.

The Florentine architect Angelo Renna was responsible for the realization of the project, still under construction. The period of operation is limited only to the summer months. While in the winter months the island could go “on vacation” and be easily anchored to the port.

An important project, which would be very good for the environment and the sea constantly threatened by the plastics that unfortunately are now found everywhere. A small island capable of restoring habitat to all those marine species in difficulty.
