Not all architectural projects are born to be realized, some are destined to remain simple renderings, but they must not be less important than others. This is why in 2013 Blank Space was born, a platform founded by Matteo Hoffman and Francesca Giuliani, a place where you can experiment and where architecture has a new role. With the birth of Blank Space was also born Fairy Tales 2020, a fictitious architecture competition, this year at its seventh edition. 

To take part in the competition you have to submit a proposal that investigates current events through an architectural project and a story, then each work is submitted to a panel of architects, designers, and storytellers who select three winners. 

This year’s winners are Amás Fischer and Carlotta Cominetti, founders of Virginlemon, a Paris-based studio, who presented the project entitled “The year without a winter”. 

The renderings accompany us into a future forced to come to terms with unstoppable climate change and constant temperatures above the norm. 

In this world, the population is forced to live in self-sufficient structures, cooled by hundreds and hundreds of air conditioners, while outside the desert is the boss. Amás Fischer and Carlotta Cominetti themselves have noticed how their story and project, in which people are forced to wait for the situation to change and in which technology is part of almost every aspect of life, resembles very much the situation we are living in these days. The message they want to give, however, leaves room for hope, because although the scenarios presented in “The year without a winter” are from the post-apocalyptic world, the two architects emphasize how it is precisely in times of crisis that man is able to reinvent himself and give life to something new.
