Textless, a world without writings and signs

Gareth Smith and Jenny Lee are a couple at work and in life with a great passion for filmmaking, animation, and design. Their latest short film Textless is based on the idea of a world without writings, signs or advertisements.

From a shot that seems to be taken from the window of a car racing through the streets of California, we see the letters of the famous neon signs falling one on top of the other, the inscription STOP coming out of the frame of the famous red hexagonal sign and dissolving into thin air.

The question we ask ourselves once we’re finished watching Textless is: can we live in a world without words? Can we still find our way around? Are they necessary or have we become slaves to them?
