Vans x Atiba Jefferson: where skateboarding meets graffiti and photography

As skateboarding keeps proving it’s much more than just a sport, Vans once again weaves together creativity, community and visual culture with a new capsule created together with Atiba Jefferson. A figure we delved into last week, when we dedicated an entire feature to him in our photography section, telling the story of how his eye has defined the aesthetic of contemporary skateboarding. Here, however, we’ll focus on the new ATIBA x VANS: United Through Skateboarding collection, exploring it in detail.

The capsule was born as a celebration of the connections that skateboarding is able to create, the ones Atiba has been telling for decades through his photographs, many of which have become iconic over the last thirty years. The project pays tribute to this double path, from the streets to the studio, bringing photography, design and the culture that has shaped his work into dialogue. The presence of HAZE, graffiti legend and longtime friend of Atiba, adds yet another narrative layer that materialises in an immediate aesthetic that fits perfectly with the Vans universe.

The collection brings together footwear, apparel and accessories in a recognizable visual language that draws both from Atiba’s most celebrated photographs and from previously unseen archive shots. The Skate Half Cab® with WaffleCup™ outsole introduces an insole decorated with one of the signature photos of John Cardiel, paired with an exclusive artwork by HAZE, turning a hidden detail of the shoe into something more meaningful. The Skate Old Skool™ 36+ builds on the same approach with imagery, graffiti-inspired details and a construction that updates an icon without betraying its identity.

Alongside the footwear, Atiba Jefferson puts together an apparel selection that combines skate functionality and visual memory: T-shirts, hoodies and technical pieces where archive images turn into graphic patterns and aesthetic statements. The campaign accompanying the launch, curated directly by him, brings together skaters, musicians, artists and athletes in a diverse cast that reflects the community-driven nature of skateboarding. It’s a choral narrative made up of urban spots, playgrounds and moments of genuine sharing that capture the spontaneity of that world.

United Through Skateboarding is not just the name of the campaign in collaboration with Jefferson, but the very soul of the project: a collection that speaks of friendships, skateboarding, photography and so much more; a collection that celebrates a world that has become a universal language, capable of uniting different hemispheres and turning them into shared stories.

In short, the ATIBA x VANS capsule is a small living archive. A true tribute to Atiba’s sharp eye, to the communities he moves through and to that very personal way he has of telling the story of skateboarding the right way, through the eyes of a skater who, in thirty years, has become so much more.
