Not many photographers can afford to stand on the privileged side of the hedge while photographing it. Will Vogt can, and Behind the Hedges, his second photography book, published by Schilt Publishing & Gallery in April 2026, is built entirely on that position.
The images span more than fifty years of family and social life: Watch Hill, the family ranch in South Texas, and the domestic and international destinations Vogt regularly frequents. This is neither reportage nor exposé. Vogt photographs people at rest, on holiday, hunting, in the garden — the rituals that hold a class together and pass its codes down through generations. The result approaches the tableau, not through artificially constructed scenes, but through the way framing and vantage point transform lived space into something denser.
Jennifer Garza-Cuen, who edited the volume and wrote the essay Posture of Privilege, describes wealth as a protective layer that smooths the sharpest edges of existence. It is a definition that Vogt’s photographs seem to confirm effortlessly: children crossing a golf green elevated above a sand bunker, figures gathered on a porch in a quiet choreography, hunting scenes in remote terrain carried out with the same ease as an afternoon stroll. Privilege here is not displayed — it is simply breathed.
Yet within this atmosphere, moments of friction surface. The lone Black guest at a party. A bone yard, the remnant of years of hunts. Vogt does not construct an explicit critique, but lets certain details sit there, visible, unexplained. It is in this balance between intimacy and critical distance that the work finds its most compelling tension.
Shaped by the aesthetic of Robert Frank and the pop culture of the 1960s — the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Fitzgerald — Vogt has refined his way of seeing over time, also through the mentorship of Garza-Cuen, drawing closer to photographers such as Allen Frame. Behind the Hedges is the culmination of that journey: a book that celebrates and questions at the same time, without the two things cancelling each other out.
