ÆHD, a design laboratory, has developed M E T I, a digital timer inspired by the aesthetics of an hourglass, designed to temporarily lock smartphones and promote focus. The device boasts an elegant and minimalist look, with an elongated shape reminiscent of the classic time-measuring instrument. The project is the work of Andrea Farinelli and Edoardo Gouffran.

M E T I’s structure features two grids positioned at the top and bottom, behind which a digital screen is concealed. The central section includes a dial that allows users to set the desired time. When the timer is active, the top section displays a countdown with a glowing effect, while the bottom section showcases smooth animations resembling sand trickling down and accumulating. An intriguing detail is the potential Bluetooth speaker function, hinted at by an icon on the lower part. This feature would enable music playback while the device is in use, making it even more versatile.

To use the timer, users must connect it to their smartphone via an app developed by ÆHD. The application offers different usage modes. For instance, the “Game” mode sets a 45-minute lock period during which the phone remains inaccessible. Only once the set time has elapsed can the smartphone be used again.
