Every time we think about Rome we recall its historical monuments, from the Colosseum to the Pantheon, its magnificent museums and the most characteristic districts like Trastevere and its alleys. We rarely think of anything else, but Italy’s capital city hides lesser known places, far away from groups of tourists and inhuman crowds, which contain a beauty equal, if not superior, to the most famous destinations. 

It is precise with the intention of showing the beauty of a little-visited neighborhood, such as EUR, that Marietta Varga‘s photographic project “Another Rome” was born. 

Marietta Verga is a Hungarian photographer who a few years ago was captured by the beauty and uniqueness of the district of the Universal Exhibition Rome, built during the Thirties and following the style of monumental architecture. It is exactly the characteristics of the latter, from the enormous smooth facades to the simplified forms, that hypnotized Marietta Varga, who couldn’t help but take pictures of them. 

The beveled columns, the squared windows, the inscriptions that simulate the old Romanesque engravings are illuminated by the warm light of the setting sun. 

The architecture of EUR combined with the golden hour, when the sun touches the lowest point before disappearing on the horizon, creates a magical atmosphere that manages to take us back centuries. It’s as if an orange-pink filter gently covers everything around us.
