Baobab is a platform brought to life by photography students at the Royal Academy of Art of The Hague in the Netherlands investigating alternative channels for the distribution of photography.

Founded by Pietro Bulfoni, Kirsten Bosma and Daniël Siegersma in 2017, the magazine was born within the walls of the academic world as an experimental space for students to challenge the future of the medium.

The goal of Baobab is to push students to take authority of their own photography and professional career. So for the last edition, on the occasion of the European elections, Baobab’s founders decided to involve 25 students to portray a series of untold stories and off the radar identities. From the biggest fake-city turned into a military playground in Germany to the copycat architectural style of Romas in Macedonia, passing through the political stances of musical genres like Flamenco in Spain to Turbo Folk in Serbia. The ambition of this issue is neither to criticize nor to praise but rather to question past and present, me and you, aesthetics and politics, with the purpose of bending the narrative of the future.

“The photography world is changing and so are the photographers, we as Baobab want to be a sandbox where we can play with new ideas and partake in the photographic landscape. By improving its entrepreneurial capacity we want the photographer to find a new public outside of the comfort zone of the already established photo-world. So we’ve decided to create a magazine, a sort of cookbook where many different ingredients end up creating each time a new recipe.
