Cities are fascinating creatures. This is the first thing we read on Amy Casey‘s website and somehow manages to prepare us for her paintings.Â
Amy Casey was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, and now lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio, where she attended the Art Institute. During her career she has received several awards such as the Cleveland Arts Prize and twice the Ohio Arts Council Individual Awards, and today she is represented by the Zg Gallery in Chicago and Michael Foley in New York.
From the very beginning, Amy Casey’s artistic research has focused on one of the symbols of contemporary society, the hub of everything, the city. Large metropolises and small towns seem to come to life in her paintings: the houses overlap one another in a game of precarious equilibrium, the houses are connected to each other by wires that create endlessly complicated intertwining, like streets, or links between people.Â
Everything appears unstable.Â
In recent years, Amy Casey has added natural elements to her flying cities, so we find small agglomerates floating on water or growing on cut tree trunks.Â
In any case, as in reality, chaos is the boss.Â
