Dior Cruise 2021, a song of praise to life

An immersion in the Salento origins of Dior‘s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and the intrinsic and inseparable bond with her land, this was the Dior Cruise 2021 parade that took place last night in Piazza del Duomo in Lecce.

“Christian Dior founded his Maison in 1947 after the war, and in the same way it is emblematic for the Maison today to give new hope to fashion in this particular moment of difficulty thanks to this défilé”.

These were the words of Chiuri when, on June 22nd, the French fashion house revealed the news that the physical parade would take place in the city of Salento.

A magnificent glance thanks to the over 2000 years of history of this wonderful land, the baroque facades carved in light limestone of Piazza del Duomo and finally the traditional illuminations, typical of the patronal feasts, revisited in a contemporary key by the artist Marinella Senatore, were the perfect setting for an evocative show.

Puglia in its entirety has inspired this collection, local craftsmanship, perfumes, colours and sounds of Puglia have been the premise on which everything has been built.

The book Sud e Magia by the anthropologist Ernesto de Martino, the composer Paolo Buonvino and the foundation “la Notte della Taranta”, the Orchestra Roma Sinfonietta, Giuliano Sangiorgi, the textiles of the Le Costantine Foundation, the pizzica, the tambourines, the black and white dressed dancers and the poetry of the context have given the entire show the strength, beauty and topoi of southern Italy.

The colours and characteristics of the Salento land are reflected in the fibres and textures of the clothes, the cuts are soft and the embroidery intense.

Maria Grazia Chiuri has staged a hymn to hope, a rebirth that can only come about by clinging to the certainties of our roots, to the rediscovery of who we really are and where we come from, an almost primordial reunion with our affections and memories but above all a song of praise for life perfectly exemplified by the combination of every single element of the Dior Cruise 2021 show.
